Spotlight on the Children's Museum of Houston

From the outside, the Children's Museum of Houston looks like an amusement park; its bright yellows, blues, and pinks entice children from afar and are sure to intrigue parents as well. But what you can't really tell from looking at, it is that it's also green-environmentally friendly, that is.

Mirroring its city's progressive environmentalism, the Children's Museum of Houston is very eco-conscious. Aside from a variety of recycling programs, its garage features large solar panels that produce 11,000 kWh of electricity every year, which significantly decreases its carbon emissions. The museum also features an exhibit called the EcoStation, which lets kids explore how their choices impact their environment. The exhibit is also almost completely powered by solar energy.

Clean energy like that which the Children's Museum of Houston uses and teaches children about is something the city is becoming increasingly passionate about-and with good reason. The EPA has released a report showing that climate change-which is largely caused by carbon dioxide emissions (often from fossil fuels like oil and coal)-can cause very serious issues for Texas and the Gulf Coast in general. Estimates for how much it will cost to protect Texas from a significant rise in sea level in the next hundred years are in the billions.

Houston has been making important changes in the hopes of protecting our environment. A quarter of Houston's total electricity comes from wind energy. In fact, the EPA's Green Power Partnership named Houston the nation's top ranked municipal purchaser of green power. Changes like these set Houston apart as a city that is working hard for a cleaner future.
