Countdown to Move: 5 - 6 Weeks

Go through your closets to find items to donate, recycle or throw away. A moving or garage sale is a great way to clean out clutter.

Make a list of items you will need to replace when you move. This will save trips to the store while you are getting settled.

Start using foods in your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer, and cleaning supplies that cannot be moved. Donate all nonperishable items to a local food bank or shelter.

Countdown to Move: 3 - 4 Weeks

Have your moving/garage sale

Give away or dispose of items that cannot be moved, such as flammable liquids, motor oil, paint, solvents, antifreeze, and gas in a grill that may cause problems during your move.

Countdown to Move: 2 Weeks

Coordinate donation or disposal of anything not sold at your moving/garage sale. Most charities will pick-up items at your home. Books can be donated at the local library or school.

Countdown to Move: 1 Week

Start packing! Use crumpled paper or linens to wrap valuable items. Reinforce the bottom of boxes with extra strips of packing tape. Clearly label boxes with room destination and contents. Place a box with essentials to the side so that it can be unloaded first upon your arrival.

Countdown to Move: 2 - 3 Days

It’s time to start cleaning. Each room should be thoroughly cleaned at this time. Put aside cleaning supplies you will need once the boxes and furniture have left.

If applicable, ask your landlord or superintendent to determine if some or all of your deposit can be refunded.

Moving Day

Before your leave, take one last walk through the entire house and make sure everything in the house has been packed. Check the attic and other spaces for any items you may have stored. Don’t forget to walk through the backyard and garage as well.

Make sure all lights and any remaining appliances are turned off.

If you are using professional movers, supervise unloading of your belongings. Check everything carefully and keep a list of damaged items.

Leave your new telephone number and forwarding address with neighbors in the event of an emergency.
